Hanohano 13th Annual Ocean Challenge

The Hanohano Outrigger Canoe Club hosted the 13th Annual Ocean Challenge on Saturday (January 31, 2009) at Bonita Cove in Mission Bay, San Diego...over 400 competitors on the water on another gorgeous, California Winter sunshine filled day...

The full race results aren't in yet...but, it's clear that Team Standup Paddle Sports pulled out at least two 1st place finishes...congrats to Vicki Mills (SUP : Women) and Ernie (EJ) Johnson (SUP : Men's Stock 12'6")...

Vicki Mills was in perfect form on the new Starboard K-15...and, just smoked the women's well as a huge chunk of the men...she standup paddled the 4.75 mile course in 56 minutes...sustaining a speed of 5.1 mph over the course...she also took a silver medal away from the OC-1 long course race...

Ernie's wife Andie, also did very well...4th overall wahine...unofficial 3rd if there was a women's stock class...

14 year old Matt Becker had another great race on the Starboard 12'6" prototype...taking out scores of older, stronger men...we're stoked for him...he has a great future in standup paddle racing...

Starboard is designing and building some fast hulls...

Joe Bark's hulls and finish work are real eye poppers...haven't seen one that didn't L@@K good...

Our shop manager, John Becker, put together a good race on his BARK unlimited, especially for being under the weather...these boards take some horsepower to move along in this kind of sprint...he could barely talk...but, still gave the top men on flatwater SUP's a run for their money...take a couple of days off, bro...

Men's unlimited winner, Danny Ching, getting a little draft assist...;-)

Here's a couple random shots from yesterday...

Kamiah cruising the new Starboard K-15...

Jay (AquaMoose) Butki spin turning John's unlimited BARK...not easy to sink that tail...he has the balance of a cat...

There's another 67 images in this GALLERY #1...

We broke out another 56 images here in GALLERY #2...
