DogPeople :: Souplements
Many of you that have visited our store have met the shop dogs...our Chocolate Labs, Annie Mae and Molly Claire...

They think that there are two kinds of people in the world...us "dog people"...and, the "others"...;-)
To a Lab, there are more dichotomies...those that love the water, and the "others"...
They don't care if they are on a board or not...they'll take a day at the beach, or
Lake Tahoe...a
river in the redwoods...or, whatevers...

Anyways...it's prolly pretty obvious that we're dogpeoples...hang on, because I'm almost done gushing about our Chocolates...;-)
I want to introduce you to another dogpeople person...local paddler Emily Chan, and her new product...
Souplements...from dog people, inc.

Let's see how Annie and Molly react to the packaging that Emily and her crew have put together...a little test marketing research in action...;-)

Hmmmm...like bees to honey, it didn't take these Labs long to check out the Souplement packaging...;-)

Now, let's try them one at a time...Annie Mae...

Molly Claire...

Yummy...a little post-Souplement siesta...

Naish Summer SUP Race Series Finale
We had some killer weather and ocean conditions for the Santa Barbara Naish Summer SUP Race Series finale...
Top California standup paddle racers Ernie (EJ) Johnson, and his wife Andie, drove up from Dana Pt. to give the locals a run for their money last Thursday...
Here's Rich Schroeder discussing the course with Bryan Fernandez, EJ, & Andie...

This stage of the fun standup paddle racing series may have come to an end...but, as a result of the standup paddling camaraderie experienced the last 4 Thursday afternoons at 6:00 PM, we've decided to continue to meetup for a social paddle...same time...same channel...come join us...paddle whatever you bring...of course we'll have some state of the art race and distance boards for interested parties to demo...
All participants received an inaugural Leadbetter Beach Paddling Club t-shirt...

The top three male and female finishers now go on to compete with racers from 12 cities across North America for the Championship race in San Diego, CA on September 13th, 2009...they'll have a chance to win a Naish 14' Glide and a trip to Maui to compete in the 5th Annual Naish Paddle Championship...a 9.54 mile race from Maliko Gulch to Kahului Harbor...

There will also be an open race...EJ has added his name into the hat...which is sure to attract some other world class competitors...

The race was fairly close after the first lap...but, EJ never relinquished the lead...

EJ was getting some great glides from his new Brian Szymanski race SUP...and cruised into another 1st place finish...

Rich Schroeder had a great race for the silver medal...he'll be representing Team Standup Paddle Sports in San Diego as the Santa Barbara winner of the Naish Summer SUP Race Series...

Adam Kirkcaldie pulls into 3rd place in this race and 2nd place overall in the series...Adam has brought some more great energy into the shop as a staff member...

Rob Graham finishes 3rd in the series and will also be representing SUPsports in San Diego...

Andie Johnson wins the finale on the wahine side and will be racing for us in San Diego...

Tami Starzac has also been paddling hard...and, will be representing us at the Naish race...

Rounding out the wahines going to San Diego to compete for the Naish North American Championship, will be our VP and CFO, Deb...also, 3rd place finisher in the 9 race California Winter Race Series...

Another of the wahine paddlers to take part in the Naish Series is Ashley Parducci...Adam's gf...and, the granddaughter of one of windsurfing's inventors...UCLA prof
Allen Parducci...the other co-inventors were Jim Drake and Hoyle Schweitzer...

They come with a killer bamboo fin set, pad, recessed handle, and a bag that's a keeper...all for $1399...and, we throw in a big wave rated leash with safety release...talk about value and bang for your buck...you are definitely getting great return on your investment (ROI) with these boards...

We barely got them unwrapped and they started flying off the shelves...

Bag it...
Just got a new shipment of SUP board bags...
These will protect your board from daily wear & tear and dings. Buy slightly over-sized for airline shipping and add nose/tail protection...lightly padded (6mm)bags have nylon on one side and solar reflective material on the other. There is a fin slot on both sides. Plastic zipper will not corrode. This is a coffin style bag with side walls.

Hobie Wine & Roses SUP/Paddleboard Race
Major props to Steve Leo for smoothing the way to get an inaugural SUP/paddleboard race added to this year's 10th Annual Wine & Roses Regatta here in Santa Barbara...
Next year's event is already in the planning stage, so please mark the 3rd Saturday in August on your paddle racing calendar now...this is the only event in Santa Barbara where beach camping for an event is allowed...so, if you think that the long drive to Lake Tahoe for a 7 mile race is a burden, consider this 4 mile event next year...it's a cheap date to live like kings and queens on one of Santa Barbara's premiere beaches for a couple of days...not to mention the killer BBQ at the
Santa Barbara Yacht Club after the event...proceeds go to the
Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Tri-CountiesReyna styling the event t-shirt...we wonder if she wore it to her high school reunion last night...;-)

Try finding a spot this nice to camp on the beach in Santa Barbara...
(hint: there are none...;-) let alone for $7/night...fun racing and camaraderie...

This race features a beach start with a 2 lap upwind/downwind course...
Hobie Alter, Jr. showed up to keep everyone on the line...;-)

Mad dash through the surf...

Scrambling for the lead...

The glassy water is egg-beaten by the frenzy...

Hard fought battle between Rich Schroeder and Dan Gavere...at the end of the 1st lap, Rich hangs onto the lead...

Nick Bobroff is the overall winner...1st place stock paddleboard...

Rich Schroeder held Dan Gavere off for 1st place men's stock SUP...

Rich's training regimen is starting to pay dividends...his GPS numbers are improving at every race...

Dan Gavere powering the 12'6" Starboard Pin into 2nd place...

John Dutton slicing home into 2nd place men's stock paddleboard...

Tom is the organizer for the

Hobie Wine and Roses :: SUP Racing
Reminder about the
Wine and Roses event in Santa Barbara tomorrow...
SUP & Paddle Board Race
Saturday, August 15 @ 8:30AM
In Conjunction with Wine & Roses
Hobie Cat Charity Regatta
Leadbetter Beach, Santa Barbara, CA
BBQ followed by Charity Auction/Raffle
6:00pm Saturday Santa Barbara Yacht Club
Proceeds to go to Make A Wish Foundation of the Tri-Counties...
We had another of Naish Summer SUP race series race yesterday in very foggy conditions...last week wind...this week fog...
Exciting race between Dan Gavere (Werner Paddles) and Rich Schroeder...with Rich digging hard, and using local knowledge of the kelp beds in the fog, to come out on top...

Longtime windsurfer, Tami Starczak, took 1st place in the women's SUP race...she also did well in a couple of the Naish Summer SUP race events held in Hood River, OR...

Rob Graham trimmed 7 minutes off of his time last week...he's been practicing and tuning his gear...all fired up for the Hobie race tomorrow...

Next SUP race in Santa Barbara is Thursday August 20 at 6:00 P.M. west end of Leadbetter Beach...
On another note...we just received the new Starboard 10'3" x 28.5" Gun SUP...
At 147 liters of volume, this new SUP is going to be quite popular...slightly slimmed down version of the best selling 10'5" x 30" Drive...
We have them in stock in Classic, black camo Tufskin, and wood...

This boards dimensions makes it extremely versatile. Enough rail length, combined with the narrower width, enable it to tackle the most daunting of waves. Extreme amounts of V and thinner profile tail, creates a super smooth transition from rail to rail, while also providing an extremely loose yet driven feel in smaller surf. High performance for every type of condition in one board.
This board is also great for women looking for a bit narrower SUP than the 10'5" x 30" Drive...and longer than the 9'8" x 30" Element...

Nikki Gregg SUP Bootcamp for Wahines
Nikki Gregg is in town with her all women standup paddle fitness bootcamps...
Santa Barbara, Ca (Aug 12th-14th and 15th-16th)...
Call the shop or call Nikki directly at (808)542-5399...
She still has a couple of places left...so don't delay...
The shwag, board/paddle useage, and catered lunches alone are worth the price of admission...;-)

Nikki Gregg has 10 years of experience as a fitness professional and has now pioneered a new approach to health & fitness by combining her already successful personal training methods with the worlds fastest growing water sport, stand up paddle surfing. Nikki began to implement stand up paddling into her workout programs in Hawaii and honed her skills on the famed beaches of Oahu’s North Shore. Filled with aloha spirit and a lifetime dedicated to health and fitness, Nikki will now bring her unique brand of health, fitness and stand up paddle training to Santa Barbara...
Nikki’s exclusive boot camp is personalized; each camp will only cater to six participants at a time. Each city will allow participants to choose from either a three day boot camp during the week or a two day camp for the weekend warriors. “I want everyone to come away from the experience completely stoked, not only feeling great from the workouts, but equipped with the strength and knowledge to charge harder on their SUP boards.”, says Nikki, who further explains, “I like to change up the workouts every time. My boot camps are never the same twice. Expect anything, just don’t expect boring.”
Participants can anticipate much more during the camp in addition to the workouts. Each paddler’s technique will have an in-depth evaluation, a healthy gourmet lunch served each day after the workout, special clinics with guest athletes, and lots of gear and lots of freebies will be lavished upon each person joining the program.
Nikki Gregg has spent much of her life in gyms either personal training, managing, teaching group strength classes, and weight loss counseling. These days, though, one will rarely find her spending much time at any gym as she prefers to transform and shape up her client’s bodies outdoors on the beach and by way of stand up paddling. “Stand up paddling has done far more at improving my physique than any gym work I’ve done. Plus, it happens to be fun.” She explains, “Naturally I began incorporating SUP into my workout programs with success.”
Nikki strongly believes in her motto, “There’s nothing worse than a boring workout” . As she explains, “It’s really that simple. Committing to a healthy lifestyle with proper eating habits and exercise doesn’t need to be complicated and dreadful. Nobody should feel miserable while they are getting into shape and losing weight.” She continues, “Don’t get me wrong, though, results are hard earned in my Stand Up Paddle Fitness boot camps, I make people work hard to reach their goals.”
In keeping with her dedication to helping others, Nikki will also be donating a portion of the proceeds from each camp to several different Hawaiian Charities.
Nikki has been certified to be a personal trainer through ACE and NSCA. She has her EMT-B certification training, Swift Water Rescue Training, as well as current AHA CPR/First Aid certification.
We had an opportunity to standup paddle behind a wake boat in Utah a few weeks ago...here's Nikki on the 9' Starboard Stinger...

Starboard 7'2" SUP
We recently scored a couple of very hard boards to get a hold of...these are the smallest most high performance SUP's on the market...won't last long...special price, too...
The Starboard 7'2" x 29" "The Kid"...intent on getting younger riders on the water, Starboard released this SUP specially designed for kids...big or small...;-)
Here it is next to the Starboard 8'5" "Pocket Rocket"...another fav of our clients...
The most sold (and enjoyed) under 9' SUP on the planet...

The 7'2" is a compact, scaled down SUP to fit young light riders looking for a shape which provides enough directional stability while padding, and also rips when taken for a carve session in the waves, behind a boat or on the cable park. The rounded tail section, slender rocker and fine rails made the 7'2" an instant hit with the young SUP paddler, or waverider.

Scaled down to suit lighter body weight younger riders. Long enough to provide the directional stability needed to build forward speed. Short enough to totally shred when used on waves, at the cable park or behind a boat. Thinned down rails, make for very responsive feel in the turns, the rounded tail also helps those rail to rail transitions. As the board is short already a faster rockerline has been used. Overall a total hit with young Stand Up Paddle Surfers.
Here's
Treve putting the 7'2" to the test on the Central Coast of Cali in this gallery...

Bark 14' Expeditions Have Arrived!
Hey now...the wait is finally over...the
Bark 14' Expedition is no longer just vaporware...;-)

We've already been getting emails and phone calls asking us to contrast the Bark 14' Expedition with the other 14' production SUP model on the market...the Naish 14' Glide...these pics should help...

Pricing is $2075 for the Bark...$1999 for the Naish...
Even though they are both 14' in length, and are built for glide...that parameter of the tape doesn't tell the whole story...the Bark is 29 1/4" wide...while the width of the Naish is 27 1/4"...the Naish is built for long distance cruising and speed...the Bark is built for long distance cruising (touring) and comfort (stability)...

Santa Barbara SUP Paddle Racing
Now that hundreds and hundreds of Santa Barbarians (it is
Fiesta week...;-) and Central Coasters, own standup paddle boards...we are encouraging folks to get together and participate in some friendly and fun races...it's an opportunity to push yourself a bit and meet other interesting and kewl people that share their mutual love of standup paddleboarding...
The conditions for the fun SUP race yesterday afternoon were quite challenging...we had a late Spring like low swing through and kicked up the wind on the backside as it passed heading East...sizeable wind swell was also generated...
We put together a 3.6 mile double loop course...
Heading to the upwind mark outside the kelp bed...

Rich Schroeder and Matt Becker battling it out...Rich is quickly learning how to ride the swells on the outside to his advantage...even though Matt is a good surfer, Rich glided past him on a long swell ride, and into the lead for good...

Ashley grinding it up to the first mark upwind...

Emily Chan ended up persevering and took 1st place in the wahine class...

Adam heading for home and the 3rd place bronze medal...or popsicle stick as it were...;-)

Scott enjoying an afternoon on the water workout in Santa Barbara...

Christian at the finish line...

Rob Graham powering home...

Jon Cotter finishing strong...

Matt Becker taking the silver medal...
