Jodie Nelson Finishes 40 Mile Catalina Crossing Solo

Jodie Nelson's Paddle With Purpose 40 mile solo crossing of the Catalina Channel was a pretty inspiring effort...

For almost two hours of the 9 hour paddle, Jodie was guided by a very rare 30-foot Minke whale..."It was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen in my life"...Jodie said...

Jodie's sister documented the historic paddle with this GALLERY...

Woman paddles 40 miles for breast cancer fundraiser

--By LAYLAN CONNELLY
THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

DANA POINT – When Jodie Nelson felt exhaustion set in as she dug her paddle into the cold ocean, she would look down at the top of her Stand Up Paddleboard for motivation.

There read the names of loved ones who have passed away or have battled breast cancer – and those people were the reasons why Nelson was attempting what no woman had done before.

In an attempt to raise awareness and money for breast cancer education, Nelson, of San Clemente, paddled nearly 40 miles from Catalina to Dana Point on Saturday, a feat that only three or so men – one being famous waterman Laird Hamilton — have completed.

"I wanted to go out there and do something that was big and overwhelming ... and something I had a good chance of failing at. It's nothing compared to what they go through," she said. "They don't give up."

After watching helplessly as close friend Angela Robinson become ill from breast cancer and chemotherapy treatments, Nelson wanted to somehow show support.

At first, Robinson didn't like the dangerous idea. But she soon realized there was no talking Nelson out of it.

Nelson trained hard, spending long days paddling along the coast. About two weeks ago, her trainer and good friend Steve Adler died from an aneurysm – making the paddle that much more emotional.

She started the paddle at about 6:15 a.m., hours earlier than others doing a relay as part of the Ohana Ocean Catalina Challenge. She was the only person doing a solo paddle.

A few hours in, a 30-foot minke whale came up beside her board – at first startling Nelson and the boat crew.

The whale – dubbed Larry – was close enough that she could have pet it with her paddle. He started making bubbles beneath her, fluking, and showing his tummy to her. The whale stayed with her for about an hour and a half.

"It was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen in my life," she said.

Not once during the paddle did she ask the time, or how far she had gone.

But after 8 hours and 51 minutes of paddling, loved ones cheered as they saw her coming to the finish line at Baby Beach. Her son Taylor, 15, held a sign that read: "I'm Jodie's biggest fan."

When she got close to shore, she lifted her paddle in victory, then threw it up in the air.

"I'm pretty sure, besides the birth of my son, this was the most monumental day of my life," she said.

For Robinson, watching Nelson from the support boat as she struggled for hours from exhaustion gave her a different perspective of what Nelson experiences as she supports her during her battle with cancer.

"The struggle she went through today to encourage me was just enormous," Robinson said.

Donations go toward Keep a Breast Foundation and Boarding for Breast Cancer. Nelson’s goal is to raise $100,000, and as of Sunday afternoon had raised about $8,000. To donate, go to paddlewithpurpose.com

Steamer Lane Santa Cruz 2010 Surftech SUP Shootout

Congrats to Hobie team rider Chuck Patterson and Starboard team rider Zane Schweitzer for their respective 1st and 2nd place finishes at the 2010 Surftech SUP Shootout held last weekend at Steamer Lane in Santa Cruz, Calif.

Chuck's proven his athleticism by winning prestigious races such as the 2008 Rainbow Sandals Battle of the Paddle, he's one of the leading stand up paddle big wave riders (Chuck was the first paddler to charge the Cortez Bank this winter) and he showed all who were at Steamer Lane on Santa Cruz's notorious Westside this weekend, that he is one of the world's best in waves of any size.

16 year old, Zane Schweitzer, got 2nd place in the Pro Division of the Surftech SUP Shootout at Steamer's Lane in Santa Cruz. He is super stoked and loving his 8'0"x26" Starboard Tiki.

This is wonderful result especially after just coming back from Australia with a 6th Place in the wave event and 1st Place in the Race, and the Sunset Beach Pro 1st in the Junior Division in Hawaii. He clearly is loving the wave events and is on a roll.

It's OFFICIAL...Spring is Here...

NEXT FREE SUP DEMO IS NOW SCHEDULED FOR SUNDAY, MARCH 28...9AM-12@PM...
CALL OR EMAIL SHOP TO RSVP...

I've said it for a couple of weeks now...the best Winter of surfing in a long while is coming to an end...Spring Equinox has officially passed...some folks that I respect are saying "best in 29 years"..."best in decades"...etc...dunno about that...it's arguable, depending on how much time you have on your hands and how hard you want to chase it...what is true is that this past Winter was better than the last couple put together...

Matter of fact...Dave Kalama even questioned the end of the surf season on his Is it over? blog 10 days ago...

Regardless...with the prime window of our surf season over...November through March...and Spring officially here...our W - WNW exposed point breaks are definitely quieting down...

Surf withdrawals are now setting in with Winter officially over...Rincon, the so-called "Queen of the Coast" (more like the "Queen of Denial"...;-) has now returned to her sleeping beauty slumberfest...buenos noches, senorita...;-)

We're now turning our heads and attention from the Gulf of Alaska down towards the Southern Hemisphere...Teahupoo has gone XXL already...another GALLERY...same early season Southern Hemi swells that used to drive me to the islands in the Spring and mainland Mexico during the Summer months...the good news is that we're trunkin' it again...

Here's a few images from the Starboard collection to remind us what *REAL* surf is all about...we have all of these shown and many more new 2010 Starboard paddlesurfing boards in stock...more than any other shop on the planet...not just 2D vaporware pics...actual *REAL* boards ready to pick up or ship...IMAGINE THAT!...;-)

Let's ponder the "glass half full/half empty" paradigm...is not the fact that there are no waves required to have an incredible time on the water, the beauty of standup in the first place?

Zac Brown Band Rocks Santa Barbara

NEXT FREE SUP DEMO IS NOW SCHEDULED FOR SUNDAY, MARCH 28...CALL OR EMAIL SHOP TO RSVP...

W O W!!!
Hate to do the "you really missed it" thang...but, wayulll...you did too!...;-)

ALL 5 STRAIGHT HOURS WORTH!!!

More piicies in this GALLERY...

Unheard of in Santa Barbara music history...prolly most other places as well...

Combining the love of surfing with music and food is IMO, the perfect embodiment for a perfect day...ya know what is kewl..."life is good today"...is another way of saying "Stoked for Life™"...no wonder it resonates...;-)

We got to hang out with the band (as well as some other kewl people...;-) and sample some of the recipes in Zac's new "Southern Ground" cookbook, at the "Eat & Greet" a couple of hours before the show...

Holy shmoly was it good...Zac is a former restaurateur and chef...
One really kewl thing is that they bought as much local ingredients as they could...choosing to shop at the smaller Lazy Acres instead of the bigger Whole Foods chain...

Here's a vid clip that I made that captures just a few of the evening's cool moments...includes Bob Marley's "One Love"...

We also got to hear several songs from an upcoming new record...one, that Zac says is the best he's ever wrote...I'll highlight that at a later time...

Cold brewskis at the "Eat & Greet" were supplied from Margaritaville...Land Shark Lager...be sure to check out Friday's (March 19) premiere of CMT Crossroads: Jimmy Buffett and Zac Brown Band together...

"Brown often performs a medley of his "Free" and Van Morrison's classic "Into the Mystic" in concert, but here it takes on a giant new fullness with the addition of Buffett and his Coral Reefer Band. As the easygoing song swells to truly epic proportions, the two groups reach a collaborative fever pitch just as the country/jam rock/reggae mix peaks. Since both bands are used to that mix -- with one foot on the beach and one in a pine forest -- this could be one of the most natural Crossroads pairings yet."

Happy St. Paddy's Day :: Welcome to SB Zac Brown Band

NEXT FREE SUP DEMO IS NOW SCHEDULED FOR SUNDAY, MARCH 28...CALL OR EMAIL SHOP TO RSVP...

I got my toes in the water, ass in the sand
Not a worry in the world, a cold beer in my hand
Life is good today. Life is good today.

-- ZBB

Those are the lead kickoff words from Zac Brown Band's record ..."The Foundation"...that's been tearing up the charts and won him a Grammy Award this year's for best new artist...

Life is good today...couldn't have said it any mo' bettah...

The surf has been pumping with the air temps in the 80's...the Jasmine and Spring flowers in the air are intoxicating...life is good today...

The new 8'10 double wing round pin North Pacific is working really good...real shortboard feeling...loose in the juice...

Surf was a little bigger today so I ran a pair of small flexy sidebiters to complement the keel twins...nice having fin box options...I have to admit, I'm a bit of a fin tinkerer...always have been...

Grammy award winner for best new artist, the Zac Brown Band is out from GA on tour and is playing Santa Barbara tonight...we'll be hooking up with the ZBB before the show for an "Eat & Greet"...

"Brown launched his Southern Ground record label in 2009 and signed Atlanta based artists Sonia Leigh, Levi Lowrey and Nic Cowan. In addition to the music, Brown also is launching a line of steak rubs and barbecue sauces under the Southern Ground label, and—in partnership with photographer Jeffrey Skillings and writer/bandmate Coy Bowles—is preparing the release of his first cookbook. As Brown notes, these projects have their roots in Zac’s Place, a lakeside restaurant he used to co-own and run. “For me it’s about creating something that’s really excellent,” he says. “People are going to be blown away by how good the products are.”

Dunno if Zac will be cooking up our typical St. Paddy's Day menu...but, whatevers it is should be a might good...we're just supposed to bring our appetites, thirst, and typically good attitudes...;-)

Oh yeah...life is good today...

Hobie PFD for SUP's

We have the Hobie Belt Pak Life Vest in stock...this waist worn USCG Approved Type III PFD is inflatable and satisfies the US Coast Guard requirement while paddling in
harbors...

Product Features
USGS Approved Type III PFD
- Manually activated inflation system
- Lighter and less restrictive
- Convenient exterior zipper pocket for storage of small items.
- Durable ripstop nylon
- 2in / 5cm wide adjustable nylon waist belt.
- Includes (1) CO 2 Cylinder and instructions.

The Coast Guard recently classified "paddleboards", meaning Stand-Up Paddleboards (SUPs), as "vessels." The newly classified vessels must comply with federal Navigation Rules and "carriage" requirements when operated beyond the narrow limits of a swimming, surfing or bathing area. Stand-up paddlers need a USCG-approved life jacket for each person, a sound signaling device (whistle), visual distress signals and navigation lights (flashlight).

The same requirements apply to kayaks and other manually propelled vessels of similar size. Stand-up paddleboards are exempt from hull identification number and registration requirements. Enjoy your SUP, but please do so safely and responsibly.

Starboard 12'6" Cruiser vs. 12' Big Easy

A recent question came up regarding comparison of the Starboard 12'6" x 30" "Cruiser" vs. the Starboard 12' x 32" "Big Easy"...two of the most popular, and versatile, all around SUP's on the planet...flatwater lake cruising to surfing...these two boards are stable with nice glide...

Length equals glide...width equals stability...

The Cruiser is going to glide a bit better with 6" more of waterline...but, the Big Easy is going to be more stable...depending on your weight and paddling/surfing conditions, we may use that as a parameter to recommend one over the other...

SUP Traction Pads :: Today and Yesterday

Just received a new shipment of SUP traction pads...with thermoform microdot embossing...universal template outline utilizing 7 individual, spreadable pieces to fit a large variety of boards...the pieces have a CNC routed bevel around the outer edge to give a finished look and feel...long proven PSA (pressure sensitive adhesive)...ultra-lightweight and they bead H20...will allow you to leap over tall buildings in a single bound...yada...yada...yada...;-)

Seriously though, they really are nice...we use them exclusively on all of our North Pacific customs and offer them to our Starboard "StarTouch" clients...

Some of you guys/gals may remember way back in the day before traction pads became standard issue on most production SUP's...we used surfwax, pieces of sailboard pads, and/or longboard pads...and, "El Gripo"...

El Gripo was developed by Tom Morey and was an evolution of "Slipcheck" which sold over 100000 units in the 60's and 70's to longboard noseriders...fast forward to the late 2000's and we have "Monster Paint"...and, Starboard's new "StarTouch"...

Pre-production Sean Ordonez "Big Red"...longboard pad with clear "El Gripo" sprayed...

standup_gear/slides/standup_gear4.jpg

Since we were the first ones in the world to manufacture epoxy molded SUP's...this was before Jimmy Lewis, Surftech Lairds, Starboard, Naish, PSH and the dozens and dozens that came later...back when Pohaku made only paddles before becoming C4...

We were the first SUP retail entity to develop die-cut pads for our standup paddle boards...before we opened the first fully dedicated SUP store in the Americas...
matter of fact, I remember contacting a windsurfing/kiteboarding pad manufacturer now trying to pose as a premiere SUP accessory manufacturer, about getting some bigger pads die cut for standup paddleboards...and, they asked "what's a standup paddleboard?"...that's not too bad because a lot of people asked the question back in the day...it's when they asked in a snobby wind fiend tone, "why would you want to do THAT?"...that I hung up and found another source for EVA pads...our shop logo pads are still in use...

Other firsts include being the first production epoxy SUP manufacturer with provisions for a handle...go figure...some manufacturers are just getting around to that small detail...;-)

We were the first to manufacture SUP's with mast tracks...and, the first to install double leash plugs...something that I developed on my surfboard guns from surfing in Humboldt back in the big wave pioneering days...

We were also the first to stock SUP bags that fit...and, are reasonably priced...

Stay tuned...we have some kewl new SUP bags on the way...

Not all of our early ideas and efforts were good...we've abandoned the coiled leash...we did them in every iteration...OK for distance paddling...but, they sucked in the surf...think about old telephone cords...;-)

Click link for other kewl SUP accessories...we are a true ONE STOP SUP SHOP...

Happiness Is...

Happiness is a lot of things to a lot of different people...

To some folks happiness is "a little bit of chicken fried...cold beer on a Friday night...pair of jeans that fit just right...and the radio up..."

Zac Brown wrote that puppy along with some other tunes on his record "The Foundation", that earned him and his band, Zac Brown Band, a recent Grammy for "Best New Artist"...

We're hooked up with front row tickets when the band visits Santa Barbara on March 17th at the Arlington Theatre...yeehaw!!!

Speaking of brown and happiness...our chocolate Labrador Retrievers, Annie Mae and Molly Claire, exude happiness...especially, when they are outdoors on a sunny, beautiful day like yesterday...

There's some chocolate goodness available from one of our windsurfing clients who is a Labrador breeder...she has bred a lab who is related to Annie...these labs have really sweet dispositions...two females and a male are left...5 weeks old...

Charles Schulz was on to something when he wrote "Happiness is a warm puppy."

Those puppies are sure to bring waves of happiness to somebody(s)...

Segueing off of waves of happiness (I reckon this is a surfing sports blog afterall...;-) yesterday brought yet another swell into the SB Channel...not the cleanest wave conditions with one storm passing, and another lined up for Tuesday/Wednesday...and, yet more rainy WEATHER on the weekend...but, it was fun and uncrowded...and, the surfers that were out had great attitudes...could it be that surfers are finally starting to reach the wave saturation point after a couple of drought years?...
