Redondo Lanakila Race
The Lanakila Outrigger Canoe club hosted a race in the Southern California Winter Racing Series on Saturday at Moonstone Park in Redondo Beach Harbor...
A consistent swell pounded the breakwall outside of the harbor making for some challenging conditions...here the racers are negotiating the first turn as they leave the protection of the harbor...many competitors dropped out minutes after hitting the open ocean...

Eric Starnes was able to put together a great race and finished 1st...with Thomas Shahinian in 2nd...

Our shop manager, John Becker, was able to hold off a great performance by Jered Vargas to hold onto 3rd place on his trusty unlimited BARK...several BARK team riders have been trying to wrestle it away from him...

John's last BARK unlimited was hot-shotted to the East Coast where it literally smoked the competition at one of the first SUP races to be held there...one SUP blogger (Dwight) referred to it as the
"secret weapon"...
East Coast paddle racing competitions are prolly 1-2 years behind California at this point...I'm positive that it is already starting to gain traction...what, with NASCAR and all...;-)
Hobie rider Byron Kurt held off Ernie (EJ) Johnson by being on the much more stable carbon Hobie...all of the carbon 12'6" Hobies finished the course...gorgeous boards...we have one in stock if anyone is interested...

You almost NEVER see a wet EJ...but, here he is sopping wet...he says it really takes some skill climbing back inside his 23" NCP when he dumps it...which isn't very often...

Here is Ernie shiny, happy, and dry at the start of the race sporting his new
Johnson Big Stick racing paddle...OMG is this SUP paddle light and gorgeous...he has some really trick blade designs going on...they pull straight as an arrow and have super clean release...we have a half dozen of them in stock in varying lengths...EJ puts his heart and soul into this hand crafted product...you're definitely getting your $350 worth...

Our team rider Brian Fernandez powering the Starboard K-15 with the new Powerex SUP paddle...first time he had used either...he only dumped the K-15 twice on the outside as he got broadsided by a mistimed wave...so much for it only being considered a flatwater machine...

Team rider Todd Strand finishing on his carbon Hobie 12'6"...he was just interviewed
about
standup paddle racing by the UC Santa Barbara newspaper, The Daily Nexus...
I've never heard an F-bomb or a "dude" come out of his mouth...so please disregard the sensationalistic journalism if you will...prolly trying to increase readership with controversy...;-)

Our shop V.P. powering into 1st place SUP women's division by default...
Deb was the only woman to finish on a standup...the others dropped out early on in the race after making the turn up into the swells outside of the harbor...
She grabbed my 14' Bark at the last minute and I quickly did a fin change...
I knew that she would/could gut it out after doing a downwinder on Maui with her one day in 45 mph gusts...psycho conditions coming out of Maliko Gulch...the wave runner launch for Jaws on maui's North Shore...
GOOD JOB DEB!!!
