Jay (Aquamoose) Butki ( "Paddler of the Week" :
paddleboard.com) nearly gets picked off powering through the surf on Joe Bark's personal brand new
(never ridden) carbon 18'6" SUP, to get to the start line at the
Oceanside Becky Stuart Memorial race earlier this month...
He arrived late and couldn't find a parking spot...the surf was firing...everyone else paddled to the start line out of the harbor mouth...
Jay had to make up a little time...ya got's to do what ya got's to do...
This is what Jay had to say...
"I wasn't about to be picked off-I timed the righthander and the lefthander coming at
me so I could squeak through.
I was pretty sure Joe's glass jobs could handle the air drop on the back side..."
Here's a
gallery of shots from the sequence where big Jay (Aquamoose) Butki hung on the precipice of destruction...
he sure makes that 18'6" BARK L@@K small...
Joe Bark's race boards definitely are not disposable...dunno if anyone else's would have survived the air drop out the backside...

A few more random pics from last weekend's Oceanside Becky Stuart Memorial race...hosted by Oceanside Outrigger Canoe Club...

The turn at the final marker, before the sprint inside the jetty, found an exciting race for 2nd through 6th place in Unlimited Men's SUP...a few board lengths separated them...

Rob Rojas put together a nice race and already had 1st firmly in hand as the boys rounded the last mark...
Team SUPsports' (that's us...;-) John Becker had his hands full on a brand new 18'6" Bark...wrong fin...standing too far back...but, at least at this race he wasn't on the beach collecting seashells at the start...;-)
He still pulled in 4th behind Rojas, Terrell, and Shahinian...

Team SUPsports' Rich Schroeder and Bryan Fernandez couldn't make this event...we should have them back next weekend for the Tecolote 5000 in San Diego...
Our team rider, Vicki Mills, had 1st place SUP Women's wrapped up...her first go on the production BARK/Surftech 14' Expedition SUP...

Here's Amanda Harris powering into 2nd...

and our VP, Debra Keys-Thomas coasting into 3rd on her BARK...

EJ (Ernie Johnson) took 2nd in Men's Stock SUP...he is a fierce competitor and has beaten the best on any given day...

EJ is a master finish carpenter...and has been making some awesome wood SUP paddles beautiful finish work...great flex...clean & smooth exit...we are now carrying the Johnson "Big Sticks" at our shop...
