Who Stopped the Rain?

We have been under a ridge of high pressure generating spectacular weather and clean surf here in California for the last several weeks...with light to moderate offshore winds...so much for the predicted El Nino...;-)

We definitely could use some more rain in these parts...click image below to visit our weather forecasting pages...

More surf on the way...

Many of our clients...even in the sunbelt, are getting hammered by freezing conditions...if it's any consolation I saw a 31* F on the Sprinter's outside temp gauge this morning on the road out to a North County beach break...warmed up later in the day to 81* F...NICE!!!

North County sunrise...

Cold offshore winds...surf check...

The hills are dry...

Not much water in the creek...

Blue Heron fishing for breakfast...

Hollow grinders...soul session...

John chillin'...where is everyone?...;-)

Beach tracks from the holidaze...just a pleasant memory for those that made them...

Good viddles...apres SUP sesh...

Nicely restored Firebird...cruised out from town for a country burger...

Happy Thanksgiving

In this painting by Jean Leon Gerome Ferris of the "first Thanksgiving", the pilgrims depicted are having a nice little feast of fowl, venison, fish, lobster, clams, berries, fruit, pumpkin, and squash...shared with the Native Americans...

Imagine for a brief second what this country, and of course the world that it influences...our neighbors (if you will)...could have been, if we had only lived a little more in harmony with our natural surroundings, as the Indians were doing at this time in history...

We hope that you and your ohana have many things to be thankful for on this day of Thanksgiving reflection...what a gorgeous day for a paddle!

It's pretty easy around here to be thankful...what, with great weather...a clean environment...lots of freedom, health, and prosperity...and, we're all truly thankful for your support in making our business a success...even in a challenging economy...we're appreciative...hopefully, you feel the love we send your way with every ounce of your patronage...mahalo...

Channel Island view...everybody chillin' Santa Barbara style today...

Reverse view...

Miles of smiles on glassy water today...

Santa Barbara paradise...

GALLERY here...

We saw a few industrious folks out catching their Thanksgiving meal...some folks will be enjoying fresh caught halibut and lobster today...reminds me of a surf camping trip down to the Baja...one of the best tasting Thanksgiving dinners of our lives...pretty simple...lobster and abalone sauteed in garlic, butter, & beer...

Fall colors...

Here's our Thanksgiving Day prayer (holding your digital hands)...

No more sad songs...a silent whisper...

Maybe, if we all just whispered this simple mantra...positive synaptic energy would be, at the least, directed to the people in our sphere of influence...and would be felt and acknowledged...

"No more sad songs"...ONLY positive vibration...

pssssttt...the chorus is..."NO MORE WARS"...fa la la la la, la la la...
Fa la la, la la la, la la la...

Hey...here's a crazy dream...

A tipping point could ACTUALLY take place amongst, the over 6 billion inhabitants on this planet...

One can only wish...they say "be careful what you wish for"...the REALITY of this happening could make us weak in the knees...like, how the heck did that happen?!?!...;-)

You might say...yeah right...that would be like wishing to see snow fall on a California beach...

Wayullll...here ya go...surfin' in a Winter wonderland...snow on the beach in Cali...

How the heck did that happen?!?!

Wow...the holidaze are already upon us...how the heck did that happen?!?!...;-)
The next few weeks are definitely gonna be a daze...remember to smile on the water...miles of smiles...

PEACE OUT...

Happy Thanksgiving...

My First SUP

The Exocet Commando was ahead of it's time...this is the copy I wrote for it when we got them in 2003...9'10" x 36"...it had a fin in the back and middle of the board, that you could put in or pull out from the deck of the board...

"An extraordinary design concept that Exocet has busted out is the Commando. This unique watercraft is not only a two-person kayak, but also an all-around cruising style windsurfer. The built-in integrated wheel makes this a totally user-friendly, "must-have" essential addition to your quiver of watertoys. The whole family can use this multipurpose craft...you can teach on it, explore and tour, access remote areas and hard to get to windlines...fishing...standup photo platform...lash a sailrig and/or surfboard to the nose and paddle into some remote areas...surf and/or fish, then sail home...what are you going to do with it?"(MSRP $699 USD)

I used it with a converted kayak paddle to take pictures of windsurfing on the water, standing up...and, for standup fishing...

Zoom ahead to 2005 and Exocet launched the Kona line of longboard windsurfers...
At 11'6" x 27", the Kona also did double duty for numbers of people as their first SUP...

Here is a guy we sent a paddle to on the West coast of Sweden for his Kona...he became the first standup paddle surfer in Sweden...we also shipped the first SUP paddles to Germany, Austria, Norway, Canada, Italy, New Zealand, and Australia...etc...in the early days...

In 2005/2006 the custom SUP market started to develop as those shapers with skill sets that could deal with shaping/glassing large tandem Clark blanks, or hot wiring a SUP blank from a billet of EPS foam got production rolling...

We could only get around 27" out of a Clark tandem blank...pretty narrow in choppy conditions...the sport was called standup/falloff back then...;-)

I should also mention that we used surf wax for traction...

We flew Sean Ordonez over from Maui to build some homegrown SUP's...

Deb in Spring of '06 on her 2nd custom Sean Ordonez SUP...

All of our early custom SUP's did double duty as light air windsurfers...

The early days...it was fun pioneering...lots of firsts...

Early halcyon days of SUP on the Sean Ordonez "Big Red" prototype...

Sean Ordonez during a visit to Santa Barbara...getting ready to paddle the prototype for "Big Blue"...

Prototypes of the Sean Ordonez "Big Red" and "Big Blue"...which were to become the first molded sandwich epoxy production SUP's in the world...

Our first container samples of the production Big Red and Big Blue SUP's...
This was the first SUP for many standup paddlers...we shipped them all across North America and Puerto Rico...even, to all of the Hawaiian Islands...

We smile when we see chucklehead bloggers and other new SUP board companies sending us solicitations to buy ad space or boards and accessories...etc...claiming to be OG when they learned on one of our boards...or, one of the many that came long after...;-)

There was no "paralysis by analysis" back in the day...picking a SUP was quite a bit easier...you were on a waiting list for container arrival...and, you had your choice of a 10'10" blue one or an 11'11" red one...our first logo die-cut SUP pads arrived shortly afterwards...as well as bags big enough to fit these SUP's...

After selling through several containers of the SOS SUP's...we went on to open the first fully dedicated SUP store on the North and South American continents...that was thousands of SUP's ago...with many more to come...
