Adventure in Costa Rica - Part 1. 6-28-00 A new SW swell is filling in - the faces are about 6 to 8 feet with some good hollow sections. The weather is hot and beautiful. John O'Toole at Cabinas Las Olas (in Hermosa) has been very hospitable and a wealth of knowledge. We will be staying there, until this weekend when we leave for Mal Pais. This SW looks to be holding through about Friday. Freedom Adventure Tours 1 - Roca Loca in Hermosa Costa Rica Freedom Adventure Tours 2 - Roca Loca in Hermosa Costa Rica Freedom Adventure Tours 3 - Roca Loca in Hermosa Costa Rica Freedom Adventure Tours 4 - Terraza-del-pacifico hotel in Hermosa Costa Rica Freedom Adventure Tours 5 - Terraza-del-pacifico hotel in Hermosa Costa Rica 6-29-00 With some well appreciated local knowledge from John O´Toole of Cabinas Las Olas - a beaten, unpaved road led us to some Costa Rican perfection. This rarely surfed left hand point break is still a well kept secret, and no - its not Barranca. Waves today were in the 2 feet over head range with some plus sets. Just mechanical, easy, fun rides up to about a quarter of a mile. The SW is holding, and should begin fading by tomorrow. Mal Pais is our next stop. Freedom Adventure Tours 6 - Costa Rican perfection Freedom Adventure Tours 7 - Costa Rican perfection 6-30-00 We surfed an excellent A frame reef break with overhead waves - just North of Jaco. The Swell still had some West in it, but is turning more SSW and fading a bit. 7-1-00 We surfed hermosa right out in front of Cabinas Las Olas hotel with overhead thumpin waves still being caught. We then took the ferry over the the Nicoya Peninsula and took a pretty gnarly road to Mal Pais - where we are now. 7-2-00 We surfed out front at Mal Pais in the morning with what seemed to be a little more pulse from the South. In the afternoon we surfed a fun left point just around the bend from Moctezuma - about 20 minutes from Mal Pais. 7-3-00 We surfed a firing beach break at Santa Teresa with great hollow sections - seemed to be the last of the South swell though. 7-4-00 We surfed Santa Teresa beach break again at about chest high with some overhead sets - still super fun. Freedom Adventure Tours 8 - Santa Teresa Freedom Adventure Tours 9 - Santa Teresa 7-5-00 We are travelling to Playa Grande as we are in between swells. Thanks go out to Douglas of Mal Pais Surf Camp - check them out at www.malpaissurfcamp.com - great accomodations and great food. 7-7-00 We just got to Playa Grande with minimal swell - still some fun waist to chest high high tide only stuff. Small 14 second SW expected sometime tomorrow, with a bit of reinforcement mid next week. Lots of rain today, we drove down to Avellanas and Negra, Avellanas about waist to chest and kind of ugly looking - negra not working obviously. We may check out Roca Bruja with the beginning of this swell - I'm sure we'll get some waves out front at Playa Grande - we always do, but have to fight the rising crowds.
