Adventure in Costa Rica - Part 2
We've been surfing Playa Grande in the mornings as the tide is correct - we've been lucky with some offshores through mid day as I suspect a little anticyclone may be just to our north and east. A little pulse from the SW is all for the last couple of days. When you come down be sure to stop by Maresias surf shop in Tamarindo to get online and tell Chris we sent ya. The picture below is right out in front of Las Tortugas hotel in Playa Grande, Negra, it was going off this afternoon with lined up overhead peelers. Looks like some more SSW in a few days for some relief...

We surfed right out front of Las Tortugas in Playa Grande this morning. It was a fun chest high with some plus sets - super glassy and some hollow sections esp. as the tide started to drop a bit. Looks like some more SW due later this week in the late thursday, friday time frame. We got our little Diahatsu Feroza stuck on the way to Playa Negra yesterday in a river, the waves seemed to ease the troubles we had though. I'll get the Negra pics up soon. Thanks again to Chris at Maresias Surf Shop in Tamarindo for great online connections. We are heading to San Jose tommorow to pick up an amigo - wish us luck.

Surf is pretty small today - Freedom Adventure Tours Staff surfed Marbella this morning just South of Playa Negra - lighting and waves not worth shooting. About chest to head high, kind of fun - wind got on it early. Thanks again to Chris at Maresais Surf Shop in Playa Tamarindo for great internet connection. Looks like some more SW tommorow into the weekend - we'll have some pics up from Negra,Ollies and Roca Bruja.
We surfed playa grande right in front of las tortugas hotel head high with + sets and super hollow - great conditions.
We took the boat trip and surfed Ollies Point at low tide (which is where the pictures are from) - chest to head high with a few + sets. Howling Papagallo offshores made the boat trip kind of interesting. We then surfed a secret spot right hander with double overhead peaks with some sketchy rocks to dodge. With offshores all day, we then travelled to Witch's Rock and surfed head high waves with overhead sets and witnessed the best barrel ride of our lives by a brazilian in the lineup. After surfing for 7 hours and catching a few fish - we called it a day.

Seemed like the swell seemed to peak - some double overhead sets at Playa Negra, winds came onshore early.
Fading swell conditions with early onshores again - we didn't even get wet.
Head high, we surfed the wedge with a local named Rafael, very crowded and not very consistent. Today we surfed Terrazas - overhead lumps, and a secret reef break, head high A frame perfection. Caught some snook at Tulin rivermouth too...watch out for the crocs though! SW still rolling in, bigger one expected Friday.
Today we surfed near Tulin, overhead and super fun with some hollow sections. Our last SW seemed to peak on Tuesday and is fading today. A bigger SW is expected Thurs,Fri into the weekend. The first picture is of our local friend Rafeal surfing Tulin, double overhead yesterday. The second is Freedom Adventure Tours Vice President, Gabe Drill, last night in front of the lights at Terraza Del Pacifico hotel where you can surf day and night. We met up with Mark at Lighthouse Point restaurant in Jaco and had a great meal, stop by and check him out.

There were several different SW swells with 15 second intervals. Conditions were good with well overhead but semi-inconsistent sets. The wind was generally light with onshores early out of Golfo Dulce and then turning more southerly blowing side offshore and cleaning up the rest of the day. The waves were smaller on the low tide with increasing size and better form towards higher tide. It was rideable at all tides.
Saturday and Sunday
We started seeing 20 second intervals and the evening session was really fun. There was a torrential downpour Saturday evening which flooded all the roads. The swell peaked Sunday at double to triple overhead with light offshore winds the entire day. The morning was low tide and very hollow, especially through the rivermouth section. Higher tide brought the size and form with it, with many waves connecting through the entire point. There were approximately 60 guys in the water at any given time, but only 15 or so charging the bigger sets on the point. The cleanup sets were pretty hairball, especially in front of the rivermouth, where the waves suck up the hardest.
Was about 2 feet smaller with no wind and good conditions, but many more people.
Eddie Toy and Gabe Drill of Freedom Adventure Tours are still Treking in Costa Rica, now far from Pavones here is a image and the report from a secret spot. All I can tell you is that they are West of San Jose, North of Panama, and South of Nicaragua. Here is the report Eddie sent me late Tuesday night: There is a beachbreak here that is beyond words. I have been getting barrelled off my head. We have met some killer people here. The swell is starting to decrease but it has been double overhead on the sets for the past few days at Negra. Another bigger swell is forecast for midweek. We are heading back to Ollie's. Some guys I talked to said that they went to Ollie's when we were in Pavones and it was triple overhead on the sets. Should be that way Wednesday. We are coming back sometime next week. Papagallo made a return appearance with the mini summer yesterday and it was unreal. A perfect day of surfing.

FAT Vice Prez Gabe Drill getting slotted yet again
I just got word that Eddie and Gabe are planning another trip to Ollie's and Witch's - they probably went today but might be going tomorrow when a tad more South is in the swell. I'll post pictures and reports when I get them. Below is Gabe Drill, VP of Freedom Adventure Tours, getting more than his fair share of green room time. The spot is a remote beach break somewhere between Quepos and Dominical - I'll leave the searching up to you.
